News from the Board

Greetings from the NAHSL Board! The board met in Shrewsbury on September 10th.  Bear in mind that the official minutes of the board meeting will be available on www.nahsl.org  after they are approved at the executive board meeting in October in Newport.
Here’s the news!

Bylaws Changes: The Board reviewed the bylaws changes pertaining to the roles of the Conference Chair (appointed position) and the Chair-Elect (elected position), as well as language changes related to electronic voting. These bylaws changes have been approved by MLA, and will be distributed to the membership this week in preparation for a vote at the NAHSL Annual Meeting in October.  A special thank you to Marilyn Pitman, our Bylaws chair, for her ongoing efforts in this process!
Technology Grant: The technology grant task force presented a proposal and application for the NAHSL Jay Daly Technology Grant.  Further recommendations were made by the board which will be incorporated, and the “kick-off” will be at the Annual meeting, with the first applications accepted after that time!  Kudos to Sally Gore, Hongjie Wang and Nathan Norris for their hard work on this – we are very excited to begin this initiative!
Scholarship: The board, led by a small task force (Jim Craig, Claire LaForce and Lauri Fennell) has been exploring the possibility of offering an academic scholarship.  While we have set aside the idea of a scholarship for the moment, we are considering the creation of a Library Student Liaison to the Board. We will continue to investigate this idea in the coming year.

LibGuides: Sally Gore and Nathan Norris have been working on the implementation of LibGuides – which will serve as a new platform for the NAHSL website. LibGuides makes it easier to incorporate social web elements into our webpage.  Watch for the unveiling this Fall!

Membership: The board had a lengthy discussion about our membership renewal date of March 15th and the loss of benefits for those in arrears. Please be aware that the renewal date is firm and necessary in order to offer benefits such as the Professional Development award to our members. If you are concerned about your member status or the process of getting payment to NAHSL for the March 15th deadline, please contact Valori Banfi, our terrific membership chair!

Majors Award and the Green Award! NAHSL will apply for two MLA awards: The Majors/MLA Chapter Project award and the MLA Green Project award. Each award includes a $500 prize and a victory stroll across the stage at the MLA 2011 awards luncheon in Minneapolis.  Our chapter has much to be proud of!  Go NAHSL!

Board Goodbyes! Well, it makes me wicked sad to say goodbye to some of our board members.  They have each contributed greatly to our organization and I appreciate them for all they have done.  Andy Dzaugis (Past Chair), Marilyn Pitman (Bylaws), Margo Colletti (Govt Relations), and Shirley Gronholm (Benchmarking).
If you haven’t registered yet – now is the time!  Come to Newport – NAHSL 2010!!  http://www.nahsl.org/2010/
Looking forward to seeing all of you at the NAHSL Conference in Newport, October 24-26th!!

– Dina McKelvy, NAHSL Chair 2009-2010
