Networking IS Professional Development

[The following is a recap of NAHSL member, Amy Frey’s, time at MLA’s Annual Meeting in Washington, DC last May. Amy received a NAHSL Professional Development Award to help with her costs for attending this meeting.]

NAHSL’s grant facilitated my attendance at the 2010 MLA Conference in DC.  The wide array of sessions, vendor exhibits, presentations were not only enlightening personally, but they provided me with the ability to contact individuals to share their information with the readers of National Network.

One tangible outcome of attending was an article I co-authored with Barbara Reich and Stephanie Fulton on vendor relations that appeared in a recent issue of National Network.  By speaking with vendors and librarians at the meeting, identifying common and disparate concerns, we were able to communicate with vendors and address these issues in a manner to which librarians could relate and provide information they could use. This was a direct result of participating in MLA 2010.
