Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me! … (Let’s talk about the NAHSL 2015 Keynote Speakers – Pt 1)

… it’s THAT Amy Dickinson who’s coming to speak at NAHSL 2015?! Indeed, it’s one and the same. If you’re a fan of the NPR news quiz show, you might know Amy as a regular panelist. In fact, if you were listening this past weekend, you heard her sharing her wit and wisdom and of course, humor, to the mix. The 2015 Planning Committee is delighted to have Amy as one of our keynote speakers this year. She’ll share with us her insights on writing a daily, syndicated advice column – a job that requires a great deal of research, pointing people in the right direction for the right information, and often tackling sensitive issues. Sounds a bit like a librarian, doesn’t it? She’ll also talk about her commitment to literacy and a program she started several years ago, “A Book on Every Bed.”

As Frances Groen, emeritus director of the Trenholme Libraries, McGill University (another keynote speaker this year, but more on her later), reminds us, providing access to medical literature and enabling people to use it effectively are core values of medical librarianship. We’re focusing on these values during the meeting, knowing that in a world filled with information, to either be denied access to it OR the inability to understand it are failures that ultimately effect our society in negative ways. Librarians of all stripes have roles and responsibilities towards promoting access and literacy. It’s a wonderful opportunity and privilege and we’re looking forward to sharing the many ways that we do such during this year’s annual meeting.

So … will you be there? Early bird registration runs through September 25th. Don’t miss out! http://nahsl.libguides.com/NAHSL2015/registration

New this year, we’re offering a special Monday rate to librarians and other information professionals who are not NAHSL members. We realize that the content of Monday’s program may be of interest to colleagues beyond medical and health sciences librarianship, and we invite you to join us!

Remember, too, that ANYONE attending NAHSL 2015 may submit an abstract for a presentation, poster, or paper. Details are available on the website and that deadline is fast approaching! Submit today!!

On behalf of the 2015 Planning Committee, we look forward to seeing you in Providence!
