Anchored in literacy: Book drive for Reach Out and Read!

The NAHSL conference is fast approaching, and your CPC is working to iron out all those final conference details. It’s a little too early to know just what the weather will bring us (a last gasp of late summer? Gorgeous crisp fall days? We’re not allowing ourselves to think of any alternatives!). Since we don’t know what to tell you to pack yet, in the meantime you can get a head start  by picking out a new picture book to bring along!

Why a picture book? Well, our first plenary speaker, Amy Dickinson, has made literacy a holiday focus with her “Book on Every Bed” campaign. And Dipesh Navsaria is a frequent writer and speaker on the connection between early literacy and health outcomes. Dr. Navsaria is the founding medical director of Reach Out and Read – Wisconsin, and is now on the national board of Reach Out and Read.

So, we thought, why not be neighborly and join the Rx for Reading movement, by supporting Reach Out and Read – Rhode Island? Bring a picture book to the conference and we’ll donate it! They’re accepting new picture books for ages birth – 5. Books about religion and sensitive issues like divorce, abuse, or death cannot be accepted; if you need suggestions, see Choosing books for Children.
